Atalanta is the fleet-footed virgin huntress, suckled by a she-bear and sworn to Artemis. She lands the first wound on the monstrous Calydonian Boar and races among the Argonauts as an equal to heroes. She vows to wed only the man who can outrun her, until Hippomenes drops Aphrodite's golden apples in her path and wins her at last.
