Hippomenes is the youth who dares to race the swift huntress Atalanta, whose losing suitors all pay with their lives. Aided by Aphrodite, he carries three golden apples from her sacred garden and casts them aside one by one; Atalanta stoops to gather them and loses the race. He wins her as his bride, but forgetting to thank the goddess, the two are turned into lions.
