The huntress no man could outrun is undone at last by three golden apples.

Atalanta, the swift huntress raised by a she-bear, defends her freedom by vowing to wed only the man who can beat her in a footrace, and every loser pays with his life. When Hippomenes races her with Aphrodite's golden apples, she stoops to gather them and loses. But forgetting to thank the goddess of love brings a transgression that transforms them both.
