Meleager is the hero of Calydon who gathers Greece's finest to hunt the great boar Artemis sent against his land. He kills the beast and awards its hide to the huntress Atalanta, then slays his own uncles in the quarrel that follows. His mother Althaea, enraged, casts onto the fire the log the Fates had bound to his life, and as it burns to ash he dies.
