Deianira is the Calydonian princess won by Heracles, who wrestles the river-god Achelous for her hand. When the centaur Nessus tries to carry her off, Heracles shoots him, and the dying Nessus tricks her into saving his poisoned blood as a love-charm. Years later, fearing a rival, she smears it on her husband's robe; it burns him alive, and she hangs herself in grief.
