Egyptian mythology

Eye of Ra

The blazing instrument of the sun god's wrath, sent out as a fierce goddess to punish and protect his creation.

Characters
Hathor · Mut · Ra · Sekhmet · Tefnut · Thoth · Wadjet

The Eye of Ra was the blazing instrument of the sun god's wrath, sent from his face as a fierce goddess to punish or protect his creation. It could be Hathor, Sekhmet, Mut, Tefnut or the cobra Wadjet, the uraeus on the royal brow.

In The Destruction of Mankind, Ra unleashes it on rebellious humans, and Sekhmet's slaughter stops only when she drinks beer dyed red like blood. In The Eye of Ra and Thoth and the Wandering Eye, she flees to Nubia as a lioness until Thoth coaxes her home. It is not the Eye of Horus, the wedjat, wounded by Seth and healed, a symbol of protection.
