- Loki · Skrymir · Thor · Utgard-Loki
Utgard, the outer enclosure, is the citadel of the giant Utgard-Loki, so tall that Thor had to bend his head back to see its top. In the Prose Edda, Thor arrives with Loki and his servants Thjalfi and Roskva after sleeping in the giant Skrymir's glove. They lose every contest: Loki at eating, Thjalfi at running, and Thor fails to drain a horn, lift a cat or throw an old woman. At parting, the king reveals his illusions: Loki's rival was wildfire, Thjalfi's was thought, the horn reached the sea, the cat was the Midgard Serpent and the old woman was old age. Skrymir was the king himself.
