Utgard-Loki is the giant king of Utgard, a fortress in the outer wastes of Jotunheim, master of illusion. When Thor, Loki, and Thjalfi arrive, he humiliates them with rigged contests. Loki loses an eating match to Logi, who is wildfire itself; Thjalfi races Hugi, who is thought. Thor drains a horn whose far end opens on the sea, fails to lift a cat that is the Midgard Serpent, and is wrestled to one knee by an old crone who is Old Age. Only afterward does the king confess the trickery, then vanishes with his hall when Thor lifts his hammer.
