Memphis
The ancient capital at the meeting of Upper and Lower Egypt, sacred to Ptah the divine craftsman.
Memphis was the ancient capital at the meeting of Upper and Lower Egypt, sacred to Ptah, the divine craftsman. Herodotus credits its founding to Menes, the first king, and the name of Ptah's temple, Hut-ka-Ptah, is likely the source of the Greek Aigyptos, Egypt. Ptah reigned here with Sekhmet and their son Nefertem, merged with the earth god Tatenen, and spoke through the Apis bull, buried in the Serapeum.
At Saqqara, its necropolis and Sokar's domain, Imhotep built the Step Pyramid and was later revered as Ptah's son. The Shabaka Stone records how Ptah created the world with his heart and tongue, the myth of Ptah and the Memphite Creation.
