Imhotep began as a mortal: chancellor to King Djoser, architect of the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, and high priest of Heliopolis. So great was his fame that Egypt did the rarest thing of all and made a man into a god. Healers whispered his name over their remedies, scribes poured a libation to him before writing, and the sick slept in his temples hoping he would appear in dreams to cure them. They called him son of Ptah, a god who had once known mortal pain and so understood the suffering of those who prayed to him.
