Hermopolis
City of Thoth, god of wisdom and writing, where the Ogdoad of eight primordial gods shaped the universe.
Hermopolis was the city of Thoth, god of wisdom and writing; the Greeks named it after Hermes, whom they identified with him, while the Egyptians called it Khemenu, 'Eight Town'. The eight were the Ogdoad, the primordial gods who shaped the universe: Nun and Naunet, the waters; Heh and Hauhet, endlessness; Kek and Kauket, darkness; Amun and Amaunet, hiddenness. These frog-headed gods and serpent-headed goddesses raised the first mound, where the sun was born.
Two colossal baboons of Thoth from the reign of Amenhotep III still stand there, and some Book of the Dead spells claim to have been found here at Thoth's feet. Its myth is The Hermopolitan Cosmogony.
