Kek is the god of the darkness before dawn, the deep, fertile night that holds the light still unborn within it. He is one of the eight primordial deities of the Ogdoad of Hermopolis, paired with his consort Kauket, who together personify the gloom of the waters before creation. He is among the oldest forces in Egyptian thought, older than the gods of the Ennead. His is not the destructive chaos of Isfet but the creative void out of which the first sunrise must come, the darkness pregnant with the day.
