Taweret

Taweret is the hippopotamus goddess who guards childbirth and the home. Her body fuses the most fearsome creatures of the Nile: the swollen frame of a pregnant hippo, the limbs and back of a crocodile, the paws of a lion, and pendulous human breasts. This terrifying form is aimed at demons, not mothers, for she stands at the dangerous threshold of birth and frightens off any evil that would harm mother or child. Often she grips the sa amulet or a knife, and her image adorned beds, headrests, and birthing tools in homes across Egypt.
