Bes

Bes is the dwarf god who guards households, mothers, and children, a cheerful protector against evil. Unlike most Egyptian gods he is shown facing forward, a squat bearded figure with a lion's mane, sometimes sticking out his tongue, often carrying knives, drums, or a tambourine. He drives off snakes, scorpions, and evil spirits with noise and his fearsome grin, and was especially called upon to guard women in childbirth and sleepers in the night. His image was carved on beds, mirrors, and amulets, and he presided over music and dance, his ugly face the most beloved in the pantheon.
