Sif is the golden-haired goddess, wife of Thor and mother of Ull. Her hair is her glory, likened to fields of ripe grain. Loki shears it off in a malicious prank, and a furious Thor forces him to make amends. Loki goes to the dwarf smiths, the sons of Ivaldi, who spin new hair of pure gold that grows like real tresses; in the same wager they craft Thor's hammer Mjolnir, Odin's spear Gungnir, and Freyr's ship Skidbladnir. Sif's restored golden hair binds her to the harvest and to her thunder-god husband.
