Montu is the falcon-headed war god of Thebes, crowned with the sun disk and twin plumes, often grasping spear, bow, or curved sword. In the early Middle Kingdom he was Thebes' supreme deity, and several kings took the name Mentuhotep, "Montu is content," in his honor. Pharaohs invoked him as the embodiment of victorious force; Ramesses II was praised for raging in battle "like Montu." Associated with strong bulls and with the solar falcon's fierce aspect, he channels the conquering fire of Ra into war. Even after Amun rose to dominate Thebes, Montu kept his temples at Armant, Medamud, and Tod.
