Eris is the spirit of discord, sister and companion of war, who delights in quarrels and the clash of armies. Snubbed from the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, she tosses among the goddesses a golden apple inscribed 'to the fairest.' The vanity it kindles in Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite leads to the Judgement of Paris and, ultimately, the Trojan War.
