Apple of Discord
A golden apple inscribed "for the fairest", thrown by Eris, it ignited the Trojan War.
When the goddess Eris was not invited to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, she arrived anyway and tossed a golden apple inscribed "kallisti", for the fairest, among the assembled gods. Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite each claimed it. Zeus refused to judge and sent them to Paris of Troy, who chose Aphrodite in exchange for the most beautiful woman in the world: Helen, already married to King Menelaus of Sparta. The war that followed lasted ten years.
