Danae is the daughter of Acrisius of Argos, locked in a bronze chamber after an oracle warns that her son will kill him. Zeus reaches her as a stream of golden rain, and she conceives Perseus. Cast adrift in a wooden chest with her infant, she washes ashore on Seriphos, where she later resists the unwanted advances of King Polydectes until her grown son returns.
