Acrisius is the king of Argos who, warned by an oracle that his daughter's son will kill him, locks Danae away in a bronze chamber. When Zeus reaches her as golden rain and she bears Perseus, he casts mother and child into the sea in a wooden chest. The prophecy holds regardless: years later a discus thrown by the grown Perseus strikes him dead.
