Sacred Scarab
Emblem of Khepri, the dawn god: as the dung beetle rolls its ball of earth, so he was thought to roll the sun into the sky.
The sacred scarab was the emblem of Khepri, god of the rising sun: as the dung beetle rolls its ball of earth, so Khepri was thought to roll the sun into the sky. Since young beetles seemed to hatch from the ball unaided, it also meant self-renewing life; Khepri's name comes from kheper, 'to come into being'. Ra was Khepri at dawn, Ra at noon and Atum at dusk, as he tells Isis in Isis and the Secret Name of Ra.
Scarab amulets carried heka, protective magic, and heart scarabs went with mummies to Osiris's judgment. In Ra and Apophis: The Eternal Battle, Khepri lifts the reborn sun at dawn.
