Characters
Anubis · Isis · Khepri · Osiris · Thoth

The heart scarab was a large beetle of green stone placed over the mummy's heart, inscribed with spell 30B of the Book of the Dead to keep the heart silent before Osiris's tribunal. The Egyptians believed the heart held memory and conscience and feared it might testify against its owner at the weighing; the spell begs it not to.

The beetle was Khepri, the sun reborn each dawn. Anubis, lord of embalming and of the scales, oversaw its placing, and Thoth, the divine scribe, was tied to the spell: its rubric says it was found at Hermopolis beneath his statue. Its moment comes in The Weighing of the Heart.
