Osiris and the Grain: Death and Return

Osiris is not merely the king who died and was resurrected, he is the grain. His body is the seed planted in the earth; his death is the planting; his resurrection is the harvest. This identification, celebrated in the Khoiak festival, fused Egyptian mythology with the agricultural cycle that sustained the civilization. Priests fashioned images of Osiris from earth and grain seed, watered them, and watched the grain sprout from the mold. This sprouting was his resurrection made literal. Isis is the fertile earth that receives him. Horus is the new grain that emerges. The death and return of Osiris is not tragedy, it is theology as farming, the proof that dying is not the end but the beginning of abundance.
