The Fire Giant Who Burns the World

Mythology

Jotnar · Fate

Surtr is the primordial fire giant who has guarded the burning realm of Muspelheim since before the gods, sword in hand, brighter than the sun. At Ragnarok he leads the sons of Muspell across the rainbow bridge Bifrost, which shatters under their riding. On the field of Vigrid he meets Freyr, who long ago gave away his own self-fighting sword to win the giantess Gerd, and so falls to Surtr's flame. When the last gods lie dead, Surtr flings fire across the nine worlds and burns all of creation, sinking the scorched earth into the sea before it rises again, green and new.
