Norse mythology

Muspelheim

The blazing realm of fire and flame at the southern edge of the cosmos, guarded by the giant Surtr and his flaming sword.

Characters
Hrym · Surtr

Muspelheim, or Muspell, is the blazing realm of fire at the southern edge of the cosmos, so bright and hot that no one born elsewhere can endure it. The Prose Edda says it existed before the world: where its heat met the ice of Niflheim in the void of Ginnungagap, the melting drops gave life to the first giant, Ymir, and the gods later set its flying sparks in the sky as stars. At its border sits the giant Surtr with a flaming sword. At Ragnarok he leads the sons of Muspell over Bifrost, which breaks beneath them, fights Freyr and burns the whole world, as Völuspá foretells.
