She Who Catches the Dead of the Sea

Mythology

Jotnar · Death · Fate

Ran is the sea-goddess who drags drowning sailors down with her net, ruling the ocean's depths beside her husband Aegir. Together they have nine daughters, the waves. Those she takes feast in her hall beneath the water, and the drowned are said to be welcome there if gold is sent down with them. Norse sailors carried coins so Ran would receive them kindly should the sea claim them. With her wide net spread to snare ships and men, she is the cold sovereign who gathers the dead of the waves.
