Pelias seizes the throne of Iolcus from his half-brother Aeson and rules in fear of a prophecy that a man wearing one sandal will undo him. When Jason arrives missing a sandal, Pelias dispatches him on the impossible quest for the Golden Fleece, expecting him to die. His doom comes through Medea, who tricks his own daughters into boiling him alive with a false promise of restored youth.
