Niobe is the queen of Thebes who boasts that her seven sons and seven daughters make her greater than Leto, who bore only two. In vengeance Apollo and Artemis shoot down every one of her children with their arrows. Frozen by grief, Niobe is turned to stone, and even as rock her tears keep flowing as a mountain stream.
