Morpheus is the god of dreams, a son of Hypnos, Sleep itself, who shapes and mimics human forms to walk through the dreams of mortals. He can take on any voice, face, and bearing so perfectly that no sleeper can tell him from the living. At the bidding of the gods he comes to the grieving Alcyone in the likeness of her drowned husband, to break the news of his death.
