Mimir guards the well beneath Yggdrasil's root that holds wisdom and understanding. Odin gives up one eye to drink a single draught from it. Sent as an Aesir hostage in the truce with the Vanir, Mimir is beheaded by his hosts; Odin embalms the head with herbs, chants spells over it, and keeps it to whisper counsel and secrets from far places. Before Ragnarok he questions the severed head one last time. The Mimisbrunnr, the gushing well of the wise, is his lasting mark on the cosmos.
