Mimir's Well

The well of infinite wisdom hidden beneath one of Yggdrasil's roots, where Odin sacrificed an eye to drink from its waters.

Characters
Mimir · Odin

Mimir's Well lies beneath the root of Yggdrasil that reaches toward the frost giants, and in its water wisdom and understanding are hidden. Its keeper is Mimir, who grows wise by drinking from it every morning with the horn Gjallarhorn. When Odin asked for a single drink, he had to leave one of his eyes in the well as a pledge, and Völuspá says it still lies there. After the war between the Aesir and Vanir, the Vanir beheaded Mimir, and Odin preserved his head with herbs and spells so that it could still speak to him. As Ragnarok begins, Odin rides to the well to take counsel from Mimir.
