Midas is the king of Phrygia who, for a kindness done to the satyr Silenus, is granted by Dionysus any wish, and asks that all he touches turn to gold. His joy curdles when his food, his wine, and even his own daughter harden into metal, and he begs to be freed, washing the curse away in the river Pactolus. Later he judges against Apollo in a music contest, and the god gives him the ears of an ass.
