Farbauti

Farbauti is a giant, the father of Loki. His name means cruel striker or dangerous hitter, suggesting a storm or lightning force. With the giantess Laufey, also called Nal, he sires Loki, who is thus born of jotun blood yet dwells and schemes among the Aesir. Farbauti himself does nothing in the surviving myths; he exists to mark Loki's giant lineage, the crack in the trickster's loyalty that runs all the way to Ragnarok, when Loki steers the ship Naglfar against the gods. The striker fathers the burner; the spark belongs to the storm.
