Daphne is a river-god's daughter and a devotee of chastity, pursued relentlessly by Apollo after Eros' arrow inflames him. As the god closes in, she cries out to her father for rescue and her flesh hardens into bark, her arms into branches, her hair into leaves. Apollo embraces the laurel tree and claims it forever as his sacred crown.
