God of the river Peneus in Thessaly. As the divine father of the nymph Daphne, he became the unwilling instrument of one of the most famous transformations in Greek mythology. When Apollo pursued his daughter with relentless desire and she cried out for rescue, Peneus answered, not with force but with change, transforming her into a laurel tree at the river's edge. She became forever beautiful, forever untouched, the symbol Apollo chose to honor.
