Buri

Buri is the first of the gods, ancestor of the Aesir. When the cosmos holds only frost and the great cow Audumbla, she licks the salty rime-stones for nourishment, and over three days Buri emerges from the ice: first hair, then a head, then a whole man, fair and strong. He fathers a son, Bor, who weds the giantess Bestla, and from that union come Odin, Vili, and Ve, who slay Ymir and shape the world. Buri does no deed and speaks no word in the Eddas, yet every god descends from this man drawn out of the rime by a cow's tongue.
