Asclepius is the mortal son of Apollo who masters the healing arts so completely that he can raise the dead. For overturning the natural order Zeus strikes him down with a thunderbolt, then sets him among the stars and the gods as the divine patron of physicians, his serpent-twined staff the emblem of medicine ever since.
