Angrboda

Angrboda, whose name means Grief-Bringer, is a giantess of Ironwood and Loki's lover. By him she bears the three monsters who will end the world: Fenrir the wolf, who bites off Tyr's hand and will swallow Odin at Ragnarok; Jormungandr, the serpent coiled around Midgard who is Thor's doom; and Hel, the half-living queen of the dead. The gods, learning of these children's fates, seize them and try to contain each one, binding the wolf, casting the serpent into the sea, and sending Hel to rule the underworld. Through her offspring she breeds the very forces that will tear the cosmos apart.
