Huginn and Muninn

Norse mythology

Huginn and Muninn

The twin ravens of Odin, Thought and Memory, who fly across all the worlds each day and return to whisper their secrets into his ears.

Characters
Huginn · Muninn · Odin

Huginn and Muninn, Thought and Memory, are the two ravens of Odin. The Prose Edda says they sit on his shoulders and speak into his ears everything they see and hear: he sends them out at daybreak to fly over the whole world, and they return by breakfast, which is why he is called the raven god. In Grímnismál, Odin admits he fears each day that Huginn may not come back, but fears more for Muninn. Their names come from Old Norse words for thought and mind, and Ynglinga saga adds that Odin had taught them to speak.
