Norse mythology
Niflheim
The primordial world of ice and mist, one of the two realms that existed before creation, source of the rivers Elivagar.
Niflheim, the world of mist, is the realm of ice and fog in the north that existed long before the earth was made. The Prose Edda places at its heart the spring Hvergelmir, from which flow the rivers called Elivagar, whose venomous waters froze into layer upon layer of rime. Where that ice met the heat of Muspelheim in the great void of Ginnungagap, it thawed, and from the drops came the giant Ymir and the cow Audumbla, who fed him with her milk. Later Odin cast Hel down into Niflheim, and one of Yggdrasil's three roots reaches over it, gnawed from below by the dragon Nidhogg.
