Sobek is the crocodile god of the Nile, its waters, and the raw power they carry. Depicted as a crocodile or a crocodile-headed man crowned with horns, plumes, and a sun disk, he is fierce, virile, and protective, a god of the flood, fertile marshes, and military might. Pharaohs took his strength as their own, and at Crocodilopolis and Kom Ombo live crocodiles were kept as his living image, adorned with gold and jewels. He is sometimes called Sobek-Ra, joined with the sun, and is said to have emerged from the primeval waters at creation.
