Python is the monstrous earth-serpent that guards the oracle at Delphi, offspring of Gaia herself. Sent by jealous Hera to hound the pregnant Leto, the dragon is hunted down by her son Apollo, who slays it with his arrows and claims the sanctuary as his own. In its memory Apollo founds the Pythian Games and names his prophetess the Pythia.
