Nemty is a falcon god and divine ferryman, best known from the Contendings of Horus and Seth. Forbidden to carry Isis across the water, he is tricked by the disguised goddess into ferrying her after she bribes him with a golden ring. For taking the bribe, Nemty is punished: the front of his toes, or claws, are cut off, a detail Egyptians used to explain a feature of his cult. A boundary-crossing deity who guards the threshold between river banks and realms, his fall makes him a rare cautionary figure about corruption in divine office.
