Jord is the giantess who is the earth itself, daughter of Nott the night and mother of Thor by Odin. Her name means simply land or ground, and the skalds call Thor son of Jord when they praise him. Through her the thunder god is rooted in the soil he defends: the same power that splits storm clouds also guards the fields and brings the rain that feeds them. Counted among the goddesses yet born of giant stock, she bridges the two kindreds, the ancient fertile ground from which Asgard's mightiest defender springs.
