Gerd

Gerd is a radiant giantess, daughter of the jotun Gymir, so beautiful that her bare arms light the sky and sea. The Vanir god Freyr spies her from Odin's high seat Hlidskjalf and falls sick with longing. He sends his servant Skirnir to woo her, lending him his magic sword and a horse that crosses the wall of flame around her hall. Gerd refuses gold and golden apples until Skirnir threatens her with a runic curse of madness and barrenness; only then does she agree to meet Freyr in the grove Barri. For her, Freyr surrenders the sword he will lack at Ragnarok.
