Callisto is a virgin huntress sworn to Artemis, seduced by Zeus in disguise and cast out when her pregnancy is discovered. Transformed into a bear, by jealous Hera or wrathful Artemis, she roams the wilds until her own grown son nearly hunts her down. Zeus lifts them both into the sky, where she becomes the Great Bear, Ursa Major.
