Bergelmir is the frost giant who survives the great flood at the beginning of the world. When Odin and his brothers slay the primeval giant Ymir, his blood gushes out in such a torrent that it drowns nearly the entire race of frost giants. Bergelmir alone escapes, climbing with his wife onto a hollowed vessel, and from this single surviving pair the later giants descend. He is the seed that ensures the jotnar endure, so the enmity between gods and giants carries on through the ages toward Ragnarok.
