Amphiaraus is the prophet-warrior of Argos who foresees that the march of the Seven against Thebes will end in his own death, and tries to refuse. Betrayed by his wife Eriphyle, bribed with a cursed necklace, he is forced to ride to war. As he flees the rout, Zeus splits the earth with a thunderbolt and swallows him alive, chariot and all, to become an oracle of the dead.
