Alviss

Alviss, whose name means All-Wise, is a dwarf who comes to Asgard to claim Thor's daughter Thrud, promised to him in the thunder god's absence. Thor, returning, refuses to release her outright and instead challenges the dwarf to prove his wisdom. Through the night Thor asks how each thing, earth, sky, moon, sea, ale, is named among gods, giants, elves, and dwarves, and Alviss answers every question with dazzling knowledge. But the questioning runs until dawn, and sunlight turns the dwarf to stone. Cunning beats learning; Thor wins his daughter back by simply talking until daybreak.
