Andvaranaut
The cursed ring of the dwarf Andvari, capable of producing gold endlessly yet carrying a doom that destroys all who possess it.
Andvaranaut, Andvari's gift, is the ring of the dwarf Andvari, who could multiply his wealth with it. When Loki killed Otr, Hreidmar's son, who was fishing in the shape of an otter, the gods owed a ransom of gold. Loki caught Andvari and took all his treasure; the dwarf begged to keep the ring, and when Loki seized it too, he cursed it to destroy every owner. The curse struck at once: Fafnir murdered his father Hreidmar for the gold, and Sigurd, urged on by Regin, killed Fafnir. In the Völsunga saga the ring passed through Brynhildr and Gudrun before Gunnar and Hogni sank the gold in the Rhine.
